UPMC opened an $85 million expansion of its heart institute at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville this May, adding capacity for one of the region's busiest pediatric cardiac programs. Growth and Cutbacks, at the Same Time
The Lawrenceville expansion isn't happening in isolation. In the same stretch of 2026, UPMC also signed a deal to acquire Ohio's Trinity Health System from CommonSpirit Health, a transaction expected to close this fall. Around the same time, UPMC confirmed layoffs affecting roughly 200 of its 100,000 employees and the elimination of about 300 vacant positions — reductions the health system described as concentrated outside of clinical and patient-facing roles.
Taken together, the moves paint a picture of a health system making selective, large-scale bets — expanding where it sees long-term demand, like pediatric cardiac care, while pulling back administratively elsewhere.
